An Introduction to a Paleo Lifestyle

I was introduced to the Paleo eating plan by my Naturopath, in efforts to design a healthy baby in the near future. The Paleo way is said to improve your reproductive health by stabilizing hormones and providing all the beneficial micronutrients that a modern diet is often lacking.

On the physical aspect of my new lifestyle, I’ve lost 6 pounds in 4 weeks. My body literally feels different. I’ve noticed muscles and curves on my body that I have never felt before which is liberating and works as physical proof of my stellar poise and effing hard work.

What is the Paleo Lifestyle?

The Paleo way-of-life brings us back roughly a kagillion years ago to a much simpler time in which our ancestors inhabited. A time completely free of refined foods, trans fats and sugars. All in which have been proven to be at the root of degenerative diseases such as obesity, cancer, diabetes, heart disease, Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s, depression and infertility.

Can't eat:

  • Dairy
  • Grains
  • Processed Foods & Sugars
  • Legumes (which I actually still eat...how bad can hummus be?)
  • Starches
  • Alcohol (the most difficult for me)

Can eat:

  • Lean Proteins
  • Fruits & Vegetables
  • Seafood
  • Nuts & seeds
  • Healthy Fats

In a nutshell, some smart chuck said, “Hey - I have an idea! I'm going to create an eating plan that cuts out everything that has been proven to destroy your body and call it the Paleo Diet!” I guess giving it a name makes it much more marketable, but like, com’on, it’s really a no brainer if you want to be your healthiest.

My Initial Experience:

Besides the physical proof of better health with clear skin, higher energy levels and losing weight, the first week was hard. And I mean hard. But now that I’m through the trenches, I know that the period of cravings and unease was about sooo much more than food and alcohol. I had to find new ways of emotional release as that delicious bowl of ketchup chips was now out of reach.

If I’m having a bad day (which is far less often than the eat-whatever-you-want diet I was on before) I feel incredibly vulnerable and exposed, like I’m naked in the middle of Times Square on NYE. But…like all things, it does get easier with time. By week 3, I was good.

By allowing the incredibly uncomfortable and suppressed feelings to rise to the surface and not get buried deep by 5¢ candies and a vodka soda, there is no more resistance. I have virtually no choice but to feel. It’s like all my feelings wanted, were to be acknowledged. And nothing more.

My  #1 Tip for Success

If this lifestyle peaks your interest, my #1 tip would be to find an incentive. If you’re like me and are planning on making a baby in the next few months, that baby is le parfait incentive, especially knowing that the first 8 weeks of pregnancy are key for healthy development. If you need help coming up with an incentive, shoot me an email at info@spenserbrassard.com.
